From Proto-Balto-Slavic *rudḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rudʰéh₁ti (to be red), from *h₁rewdʰ- (red).

Indo-European cognates include Latin rubeō (I am red), Proto-Germanic *rudjaną (to be red).
