From Proto-Balto-Slavic *tekas, from Proto-Indo-European *tekʷos, from *tekʷ- (to run, flow). Equivalent to *teťi (to flow, run) +‎ *-ъ.

Baltic cognates include Latvian tȩks m (foot-path), tȩka f (foot-path)

Indo-European cognates include Old Irish intech (road)
