From earlier *tekti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *tek-, from Proto-Indo-European *tekʷ- (“to run, flow”).^[1]

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian tekė́ti (“to flow, run”), 3sg. tẽka and Latvian tecêt (“to flow, run”), 1sg. teku.^[2]

Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit तक्ति (tákti, “to rush”), Old Irish tachid (“to flee”).
