From Proto-Slavic *teťi (stem *tek-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *tektei, from Proto-Indo-European *tekʷ-. Cognates include Lithuanian tekė́ti, Latvian tecēt and Sanskrit तक्ति (takti).
