Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From re- +‎ paenitīre, the latter a Late Latin variant of Classical paenitēre.

Compare the attested repoenitēre.

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

*repaenitīre (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)

  1. (reflexive) regret, repent

Reconstruction notes[edit]

The rhizotonic conjugations had */ˈɛ/, as in */se reˈpɛnetat/ > Italian si ripènta, Spanish se arrepienta.

The varying presence or absence of reflexive -si/-se in the descendants below is mainly due to different lemmatization practices.
