Etymology

[edit]

From Old Galician-Portuguese repentir (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *repaenitīre, from Late Latin paenitīre, from Classical Latin paenitēre.

The expected outcome would have had voiced /d/; cf. the alternative form above (< Medieval Latin repoenitēre). As occurred in Old Spanish,[1] the medieval repentir may be due to French influence.

Compare Portuguese arrepender, Spanish arrepentirse.
