From Proto-Indo-European *swet- (self; one's own), from *swé; compare Lithuanian svetỹs (foreigner), Russian сват (svat, matchmaker; father-in-law), Attic Greek ἔτης (étēs, relative, friend), Elean Greek ϝέτας (wétas). Related to u. Closely related to Messapic veinan (his, one's).
