[edit]Etymology
[edit]Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂wéh₂, from *lewH- (“to cut”) + *-éh₂, with accent retraction due to Hirt's law. Hirt's law was undone in the Latvian and West Slavic dialects. In Lithuanian dialects, the tendency to generalize the root accent prevailed. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Direct cognate with Proto-Germanic *lawwō (“groove”); other cognates include Sanskrit लू (lū, “to cut, sever”), Ancient Greek λῡ́ω (lū́ō, “to loosen, dissolve”), as well as, within Balto-Slavic, Lithuanian liáutis (“to cease”).[1]
