Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *arbaz (whence Old Norse arfr, Swedish arv). The original sense in Proto-Finnic may have been "(one's) part, share".[1] Alternatively, the meaning adjoins the concept in the Germanic inheritance system in which property was allotted by drawing lots, cf. Swedish arv in this sense. Cognate with Proto-Samic *vuorpē.
