Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *särke. Cognates include Erzya сэрьге (seŕge, roach), Moksha сярьге (śaŕge, roach), Eastern Mari шеренге (šerenge, roach), perhaps also Northern Mansi та̄рка (tārka, ruffe), Eastern Khanty лӓрәг (lärəg, ruffe), Northern Khanty лӓр (lär, ruffe).
