[edit]From *fadēr + *banô, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tr̥-gʷʰon-ō, ultimately from *ph₂tḗr (“father”) + *gʷʰen- (“to strike, kill”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πατροφόνος (patrophónos), πατροφονεύς (patrophoneús), Sanskrit पितृहन् (pitṛhan).
