Etymology

From lost *fan- +‎ *-ją, from *pen- (moist, wet, mud, swamp, water). Cognate with Old Prussian pannean (bog), Proto-Celtic *ɸenos (water); possibly also related to Proto-Germanic *funhtijaz (wet, damp), Old English fyne (mold).[1][2]
