From Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₂bʰ- (to dive, dive in). Cognate with Ancient Greek βάπτω (báptō, to dip, submerge), Persian ژرف (žarf), and Sanskrit गभीर (gabhīra), whence Hindi गहरा (gahrā).
