Proto-Germanic

[edit]

According to Kroonen, a nominal derivative from *weganą (to move, carry).[1]

Villanueva Svensson, while maintaining the root etymology, derives this noun more directly from an e-grade *-az adjective meaning "ridden (on)".[2]
