Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *wíterom, adverbial accusative of *wíteros, from *wí (apart) +‎ *-teros (comparative).[1] Particularly close cognate with Sanskrit वि॒त॒रम् (vitarám, further).[2] For the suffix development, compare *aftrą, but contrast the adjective *anþeraz.
