From Proto-Indo-European *wíterom, adverbial accusative of *wíteros, from *wí (“apart”) +‎ *-teros (comparative). Particularly close cognate with Sanskrit वि॒त॒रम् (vitarám, “further”). For the suffix development, compare *aftrą, but contrast the adjective *anþeraz.
