From Proto-Indo-European *dyḗws. Cognate with Hittite 𒅆𒄿𒌑𒍑 (ši-i-ú-uš), Ancient Greek Ζεύς (Zeús) English Zeus; Latin Iovis English Jove; Proto-Germanic *tīwaz whence English Tue. See also Proto-Indo-Iranian *daywás.
