Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ned-íh₂, from *ned- (thundering, roaring, rushing) +‎ *-íh₂. Lubotsky connects it to Ancient Greek Νέδα (Néda, name of a river), Middle Low German Nette (name of a river).
