Proto-Italic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From earlier *xostipotis (to differentiate it from a later form *hostipotis if the shift */x/ > */h/ in the Italic languages already happened during late Proto-Italic), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstipotis, compound of *gʰóstis (“stranger”) and *pótis (“master”).
