Etymology

Possibly from *muru (“group; to gather”), reflected in Japanese 群れる (mureru, “to gather”) and Middle Korean 물 (mwul, “group, crowd”), via an addition of a suffix *-a. Related to Old Korean *牟羅 (*mura, “village”) and Jeju *牟羅 (*-mura, “village”), both appearing in place names.
