Proto-Japonic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From *ne- (to sleep, H accent).

The relation to *pur- (to fall, L accent) (c.f. English fall asleep) can be discarded due to the accent discrepancy.

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Is this accent discrepency just because the first mora is high pitch?”)

Pronunciation[edit]

Accent class: HH(H)

Verb[edit]

*nenpuru (infinitive *nenpuri)

  1. to sleep

Descendants[edit]

  • Old Japanese: 眠る (neburu)
  • Proto-Ryukyuan: *neburi
