Proto-Japonic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably a spurious reconstruction if one assumes the Okinawan term to be borrowed from Japanese, as no other Ryukyuan cognates exist. If this is true, then the Japanese word derives from (ono, self) + (ji, suffix indicating having the quality of) with vowel contamination from oyaji.
