Proto-Japonic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Probably a spurious reconstruction if one assumes the Okinawan term to be borrowed from Japanese, as no other Ryukyuan cognates exist. If this is true, then the Japanese word derives from 己 (ono, “self”) + じ (ji, “suffix indicating having the quality of”) with vowel contamination from oyaji.
Adjective[edit]
*onansi
