Etymology

Nikolayev / Starostin derive from Proto-Northeast Caucasian *rʕēnq̇wɨ (lock).

Has been compared to Proto-Georgian-Zan *rḳina- (iron), Old Armenian երկաթ (erkatʻ, iron), երկինք (erkinkʻ, sky).
