Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gedḗˀtei, an essive of Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰedʰ- (“to yearn, to pray for”). Nasal infix apparently influenced by synonymous *žędati. Cognate with Lithuanian gedė́ti (“to mourn”).
