Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Subclass of the broader suffix *-nikъ, particularly formed on the basis of the past passive participle suffix *-anъ + *-ikъ.
Suffix
[edit]*-anikъ m
- From verbs in a-conjugation, predominantly forms agent nouns.
- *posъlati (“to send an envoy”) + *-anikъ → *posъlanikъ (“envoy”)
- *pomazati (“to anoint”) + *-anikъ → *pomazanikъ (“anointed person”)
- *jьzbьrati (“to choose, to select”) + *-anikъ → *jьzbьranikъ (“elected person”)
- *jьzgъnati (“to chase away”) + *-anikъ → *jьzgъnanikъ (“exile”)
- *vъzpitati (“to bring up”) + *-anikъ → *vъzpitanikъ (“pupil”)
Usage notes
[edit]- Less productive.
- In many cases, the derivation feels more natural if one applies *-ikъ directly onto the participle (X-anъ → X-anikъ).
