Etymology

    Compound of *-nъ +‎ *-ikъ, cognate with Latvian -nieks.

    The form *-nikъ seems to be prevalent mainly in East and South Slavic. West Slavic uses instead *-nьcь (from *-nъ +‎ *-ьcь), e.g. Polish pomazaniec, wybraniec.
