From Proto-Balto-Slavic *būˀtlá, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuHtlom, from *bʰuH- +‎ *-tlom. Equivalent to *byti (to be) +‎ *-dlo (instrumental suffix).

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian būklas (abode, den), bū́kla (residence, existence)

Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek φύτλον (phútlon, race), Old English botl (dwelling, house)
