Proto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *galwā́ˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *kalw- (bald). Cognate with Latgalian golva, Latvian galva, Lithuanian galva, Old Prussian gallū, galwo.

Possibly related to *golъ (bald), which is possibly related to Old High German kalo (bald). Compare also Latin calva (skull).

Relation to Old Armenian գլուխ (glux, head) is also possible.
