Etymology

    Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wérˀtei, perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wer-.

    Slavic may have inherited two synchronic forms from the same root:

    • thematic present with fixed accent;
    • athematic sigmatic aorist with mobile.
