Proto-Uralic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Often conflated with *wexe- (to take, grasp), but Aikio (2013) argues for two separate verbs, which are still distinct in Hungarian and Selkup, and can be reconstructed separately in Proto-Samic.

Possibly related with Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ- (to bring, carry), but this is less likely with *wixe- than with *wexe- due to the vocalism. Both loaning and common origin (from alleged Indo-Uralic or Nostratic *wig-) have been proposed.

Verb

[edit]

*wixe-

  1. to bring, to take somewhere
