[edit]From *arm (“poor”) + *-hert(ī) (“-hearted”), calque of Latin misericors (“merciful, tenderhearted”). Parallel calque with, and perhaps influenced by, Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍄𐍃 (armahairts).
