Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *pinnaz, of obscure origin. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *bendno-, from *bend- (to jut, protrude, stick out; peak). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *spey- (sharp point).
