Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *wōstaz,[1] *wōstuz[2] +‎ *-ī (adjective suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁weh₂-s-to-s, *h₁weh₂-s-tu-s, from *h₁weh₂- (to leave, abandon). Cognate with Latin vāstus (empty; wasted; vast), Old Irish fás (empty, void, uninhabited).
