Ultimately proposed to be from Proto-Volta-Congo *-na-. See Ayere úná, Proto-Nupoid *ə-na, Proto Ebiroid: Ebira *ɪ-ra, Oko-Eni-Osayen ɛ́rá, perhaps related to Khana míá, several Plateau terms are also potential cognates, Ahwai irya, Kuturmi ira, Ikulu ù-lá.
