Reconstruction

[edit]

The Gothic form is unattested as far as I can find, being reconstructed based on the causative and derived nominals. Rather, the verb is attested in Middle Dutch sinnen, Old High German sinnan, pointing to Proto-Germanic *sinnaną, Pre-Germanic *sentne-. A similar formation is also seen in *tinnaną (to burn) < *dendʰne-. Anglom (talk) 22:03, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Keep. Even though it has no direct descendants, it has grandchild descendants and bridges a gap between PIE *sent- and several other PGmc terms, like *sandijaną, *sinnaną, etc. Leasnam (talk) 21:07, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Your first point doesn't make sense. You can't have grandchildren without having children. —Mahāgaja · talk 21:29, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think what they're saying is derivatives, as opposed to direct descendants, which is make obvious by the derived terms section. I just don't think that warrants an entry and should be left to an etymology. --{{victar|talk}} 23:03, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Correct. That's what I meant. I know we have other PGmc entries like this, which have no direct descendants, but whose existence is inferred based on other words and derivatives. I just can't find one at the moment... Leasnam (talk) 23:08, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
