"*swem(bh)- (“to be unsteady, swim”)" questionable[edit]

The entry in Pokorny :1046 swem- is not accepted by the well-known and professional Lexikon der indogermanischen Verben (Rix et al. 2001); moreover, because any source is missing here, this entry must be regarded as questionable. HJJHolm (talk) 09:49, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

M. Philippa's Etymologisch Woordenboek van het Nederlands mentions that although the root is not attested anywhere else, the fact that it displays regular ablaut alternations makes it likely that it is (late) PIE in origin. —CodeCat 10:48, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, not quite. She says: "The alleged root *suem- or *(s)uem- 'to move' occurs only in Germanic and is possibly a borrowing from an unknown language, though the stem's regular ablaut speaks against non-Germanic origin." 77.11.192.231 06:10, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
