the laryngeal[edit]

Whose reconstruction is this? Why is there a laryngeal in it? In the etymology discussions in e.g. μανθάνω and *mazdʰáH we instead take this word back to syntagms of *men- + *dʰeh₁- maybe with an *s in the juncture. There is no internal laryngeal in *men-. *meHndʰ- looks to me like an overly-algebraic reconstruction, and I can't tell what the laryngeal is supposed to be accomplishing. Explaining the Greek α? But couldn't that be levelling from α < * in zero-grade tenses? (edit: oh, not even that; the Greek entry says it's a later nasal infixation to an original zero-grade present)

I'd like to move this page to *mendʰh₁- or *mensdʰh₁- or the like. 4pq1injbok (talk) 10:34, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
