From Middle High German scheide, from Old High German sceida, from Proto-Germanic *skaiþiz. Compare Low German scheed, Dutch schede, English sheath, Danish skede, Norwegian Bokmål skjede, Icelandic skeið. The anatomical sense is a calque of Latin vagīna.
