Etymology

From Middle High German schīt, Old High German scīt (log of wood). Cognate with West Frisian skīd, Old Norse skið, Old English sċīde, English shide, Ancient Greek σχίζα (skhíza, splinter), Latvian skaida (chip), Lithuanian skëdrà.[1] From Proto-Germanic *skīdą.
