Etymology[edit]

First attested as van sconebeke in 1341. Compound of schoon (clean, free of weeds) and beek (brook, stream). The toponym was created by officials of the Prince-Bishopric of Utrecht in order to lure settlers to the village. Compare Bonrepas, Kockengen, Koekange, Schoonoord and Wijngaarden.
