Etymology[edit]
First attested as scrinze in 1446. Borrowed from West Frisian Skrins, of unknown etymology. Possibly derived from Old Frisian skerd (“notch”) or *Skarde (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi-. Compare Scarcliff.
