[edit]First attested as scrinze in 1446. Borrowed from West Frisian Skrins, of unknown etymology. Possibly derived from Old Frisian skerd (“notch”) or *Skarde (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi-. Compare Scarcliff.
