Etymology[edit]

First attested as Snackerbuyren in 1664. Borrowed from West Frisian Snakkerbuorren, a compound of an unclear first element and the plural form of buer (house, cottage). The first element may be cognate with Middle Dutch snacker (yapping dog) or Dutch Low Saxon snakken (speak senselessly).
