From Middle High German stat, from Old High German stat, from Proto-West Germanic *stadi, from Proto-Germanic *stadiz, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂tis. Cognates include Yiddish שטאָט (shtot) and שטעטל (shtetl), German Stadt, Dutch stad, Old Norse staðr, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌸𐍃 (staþs). Doublet of stått and Stättn.
