Etymology[edit]

First attested as op die stoc hasselt in 1398. Compound of an unclear first element Middle Dutch stoc and the toponym Hasselt. It is not clear whether stok here refers to a chapel or a small section of cleared forest. Compare Quirijnstok and Stokske.
