Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German stupfel, stoppele, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German stuphila, *stuppila from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin stipula (also attested as stupula). The modern form with -pp- is of Central and Low German origin; compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German stoppel. Compare also Dutch stoppel, English stubble.

Usage notes
