Well, махро́вый (maxróvyj) refers to flore pleno, double-flowering (or just double, plenus). See also w:Double-flowered. Not sure how this relates to terry cloth. махро́вость (maxróvostʹ) = doubleness (see doubleness in flowers). —Stephen ^(Talk) 20:17, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Double flowers aren’t just double literally. They and terry cloth share a ‘shaggy’ appearance: double flowers with their many petals and terry cloth with all the loops. As for ‘inveterate’, it’s from the botany sense, just a metaphor that happened to gain spread, originally in expressions like ‘цвести махровым цветом’. Guldrelokk (talk) 05:08, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
