@Vahagn Petrosyan: No. It does not look Arabic remotely either. The expected spelling كرمشك respectively گرمشك if one writes the gāf is only the Ottoman form germeşik, germişek.

It seems like a Turkic formation related to Turkish germek (“to stretch, to extend”) / Azerbaijani gərmək (“to stick out”) (why ever, that’s pretty abstract) with the same formants as örümcek. Such peripheral plants can apparently be borrowed like կոկան (kokan, “sloe”), and the formation reminds me of the pan-Turkic kızılcık (“cornel”) which plant looks similar. @Fay Freak, thanks. I don't think the ultimate origin is Turkic. The Greek section of the Galen dictionary is too old for a Turkic borrowing. Besides, the word is found only in Anatolian Turkish and Azerbaijani. Bläsing warns that the Turkic forms are folk-etymologically reshaped. I am thinking about an Iranian origin: Persian گرمه (garma, “fruits which ripen early; first-fruit”). --Vahag (talk) 15:00, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Could be from Persian گر (gar, “mountain”) + *ماشو (māšu), literally meaning "mountain mung".--Simichka (talk) 12:48, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
