Etymology

[edit]

@Vahagn Petrosyan The etymology points to a nonexistant modern Armenian entry, while the modern word seems to be մուկ (muk). Is this a mistake? —CodeCat 18:47, 2 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Even though the modern form is մուկ (muk), in compounds the word "remembers" the Old Armenian form մուկն (mukn), under the influence of other inherited Old Armenian compounds such as մկն-դեղ (mkn-deł). I do not know how to handle such cases. Probably, linking to the modern form with a Usage note is optimal. --Vahag (talk) 07:27, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Is this something that is common to any words with a lost final -n? If so, it might belong in a grammar rather than an entry. —CodeCat 11:44, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
It is common to most (not all) words with lost final -n. Modern Armenian often uses morphological patterns of Old Armenian for forming compounds. For example, the combining form of անել (anel) is -արար (-arar), the aorist stem of the Old Armenian ancestor առնեմ (aṙnem). --Vahag (talk) 18:42, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
