So apparently a Proto-Semitic (even Proto-Afro-Asiatic) source can be reconstructed for this, see [1]. I'm not going to add it myself because (1) I know nothing about Proto-Semitic, and (2) I distrust any publication with "Nostratic" in the title. —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 00:21, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. I'm not sure how to write it now. Starling has Proto-Semitic: *šurr- (“navel, navel string”). The s-r-r root is given in Arabic-English Dictionary of Qurʾanic Usage, Salmoné's, here, etc. Wyang (talk) 09:01, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I put in an etymology without a lemma for now. Be careful with Starling; they have all sorts of crazy Proto-Nostratic and Altaic reconstructions. Madhavpandit stopped used it for Proto-Dravidian a while ago as well. —Aryaman (मुझसे बात करो) 21:54, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
