The sense iguana for Sanskrit गोधा (godhā) is an anachronism - the animal is a native of the Americas. Do we have any evidence of a modern use of the word to mean 'iguana'? There is a modern example of the usage of the word (as Pali godhā to mean 'iguana' in Pali - is this perhaps an example of an undocumented south Asian meaning of English iguana? I'm putting up a citation for this 20th century Pali usage under godhā. --RichardW57 (talk) 23:13, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- On further investigation, it appears that the use of 'iguana' to mean 'monitor lizard' is not restricted to Africa and Australia. A potentially influential usage is its usage to translate the Pali word in the Pali Text Society's Dictionary, which follows the example of Childers' dictionary. I'm going to correct the translation as 'iguana' to 'monitor lizard' outsied this entry. I'm also going to move a few other words, but I would regard south Asian and south-east Asian translations as 'iguana' as suspect. (The Thai word looks OK, even though in theory we don't accept Wikipedia as evidence.) In short

- I think the rule is that after a month of no further discussion, a verdict is declared and acted on. On second thoughts this means I should have cloned the 'iguana' definition and created a new, 'monitor lizard' definition. As the page is not to be deleted, I think almost anyone may declare the verdict after discussion has been silent for a month, and likewise, almost anyone may do the archival of the discussion a week later.
