@AryamanA I am not sure what the gender for this is (a bit confusing with place names) but it seems to be feminine rather than masculine (as you added here). Platts says its feminine, and it makes sense based on its feminine ending -i. Can you look into this? Thanks. Gotitbro (talk) 04:36, 16 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

मुंबा + आई = मुंबाई or मुंबई

Kutchkutch, can you please verify? Svārtava208:21, 11 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Svartava2: सुप्रभात/सुबह बख़ैर शांतनु. What I think you’re asking is what the expected Marathi outcome is for आ + आ. Just like how the difference between written इ vs ई and उ vs ऊ just a matter of spelling since the vowel length is not contrastive (for pronunciation: इ == ई and उ == ऊ), the difference between written अ vs आ could also be considered a matter of spelling rather than since अ = आ for pronunciation (excluding Sanskrit words and verb sets such as मरणे and मारणे). Thus, although the spelling (and spelling pronunciation) has been standardised to मुंबई, when pronouncing the term it could be both मुंबाई or मुंबई since m[u/ū]mb[a/ā] + [a/ā][i/ī] = m[u/ū]mb[a/ā][i/ī].
